Orienteering, Emergency Preparedness, and First Aid

Yesterday, our troop attended an orienteering meet. One group of 3 Scouts
were late getting back to the finish line. The dad of one of those boys
back track over the Yellow course looking for them. When he returned without
them we began to worry. There was also a group of 3 cadets from a Navy JROTC
unit on the Yellow course who were overdue.
So we organized search parties. It's a coincidence that one of our Scouts
the searching is working on Emergency Preparedness as one of his last three
merit badge for Eagle. It turns out that one of the cadets had fallen and
ankle and our 3 young Scouts were rendering first aid and were treating him
The 6 in the group were not sure where they were so they decided to let help
them rather than go looking for help and risk getting more lost. The injured
was about 100 pounds heavier than any of the Scouts so they were not going
carry him out of woods by themselves.
Things worked out well in the end. We were late getting home, many of adults
a lot, but the Scouts did the right thing.
