I work at Staples, the office supply store, among many other things.
We sell the laser pointers. We have had 10 year olds come in the
store to buy a laser pointer. Concerns have been raised among the
associates at the store, that kids this young shouldn't be able to buy
these items. Technically, we can't refuse a sale, unless completing
it would break a law (ie a stolen credit card). We have come up with
a temporary solution, however. If the child looks to be under the age
of 18, we require that a parent be with the child to approve the
Three or four of the boys in my troop have admitted to having these
pointers, and I have seen one of them use one. I have told these boys
that if I ever see the pointer, on a camping trip, at a meeting, or
any other Scouting event, I will confiscate it, and return it to their
parents (I'm not entirely sure if their parents know they have them).
We have had several boys mention that they have them, and several more
say they want to get one, but that is as far as it has gone. We've
never actually had a problem with them, and I hope we never do.
