Pinewood Derby questions

Of course AFTER I agree to be Pinewood Derby Chairman ( I thought
it was better than Blue & Gold) the Pack has decided to change
the way we do it. Okay I admit it, I was one of the ones pushing
for change. Before we've done it at night at our regular Pack
meeting time and under the elimination system used most boys only
got to race their cars twice. Now we're talking about moving it
to a Saturday and having more time for the boys to race more.
As Pinewood Derby Chair for the boys I want:
1.the boys to have fun
2.the boys get to race their cars more
3 plenty of awards to be given
As Pinewood Derby Chair for the Pack I want:
1. a smooth event that everyone enjoys
2. a Derby that doesn't drag on too long
Now, after checking the websites out there and some past
discussions here, I have a few questions for the list:
1. As a Pack on a very limited budget what ideas for awards do
you have? We'll award Pack winners, Den winners and then various
best car design, most original design, most green car etc.
2. If you do your Pinewood on a Saturday do you have the car
check in in the morning or do you do it the night before?
3. We'll have groups of 10 - 13 racing on a three lane track.
About how much time should I plan for each group to race?
Although I haven't decided the racing method to use my goal is
for each boy to race their car as much as possible.
4. I've heard of some Packs having refreshments on race day. Do
you do this and if so what items do you have and who pays for
I would appreciate any help you might give me. I would love to
make this the best Pinewood Derby ever for the boys! You can
