What Peter Murphy says about the Sport of Orienteering is almost right.
The sport does not involve the creation of orienteering courses such as
are needed for the first class requirement. However, Map and compass and
Pacing (both techniques for pacing and use of pacing for distance) are
needed to complete a PROPERLY laid out course. If the Orienteering merit
badge is being taught correctly, the successful candidate learns how to
create all 5 types of orienteering courses. Our council High Adventure
Team has conduced such a class for years for both boys and adults. As a
result, boys in the troops who have leaders who have completed the
course have no trouble with the first class requirement.
