Scouts-L Mail Archive for November of 1998: Laser Pointers

I might have missed a part of this thread, but two reasons I am aware of
that laser pointers can be a problem.
1) They could cause eye damage
2) they are used on some guns for sighting.
This summer at a Webelos Resident Camp one scout was using a laser pointer
at the campfire to point onto people on the stage area. It was very annoying.
Later that night I found out our Pack was sharing a campsite with this
scout. I asked him to please not use the pointer. His cubmaster told me
that I shouldn't talk to his scouts and if they were doing something I
didn't like I should tell him. (He may be right on this point, but he was
not around at the time). So I did.
He tried to put me on the defensive, in front of his and my scouts, to
"prove" to him that laser pointers were dangerous. I gave him reason one
above to which he replied that this was just a red diode and not really a
laser pointer so it wouldn't cause a problem.
He really saw no problem with using the pointer and was somewhat
argumentative about it. One of his assistant leaders finally convinced him
that he should ask the scout to not use the pointer.
I wish I had thought of reason two above. Maybe he would have second
thoughts if the pointer was trained on him.
