The practice of naming local council courses was recommended by National in
the 1979 syllabus for JLTC). Most courses were given names.
Quite a few picked up the name "Brownsea." This was the name of a nationally
sponsored junior leader experience focused on Scout craft, launched in 1976,
as part of a back to basics program called "All Out for Scouting." You can
find information on the original Brownsea at:
http://www.pinetreeweb.com/brownsea.htm Obviously, the name comes from
B-P's first camp in 1907.
The course in Minneapolis, and others, are known as Pine Tree. I can speak
for the one in Minneapolis. We gave it the name "Pine Tree" in honor of a
course attended by one of us many years before. Also, it sounded woodsy and
traditional and gave us a useful symbol for neckerchief slides, neckerchiefs
and patches. And the Scouts liked the idea. The Minneapolis course was
started in 1988 and is still running along the same lines.
The grand-daddy of the current leadership development JLTC is White Stag in
the San Francisco Bay Area. You can learn about White Stag, its origins and
traditions (which are really quite fascinating) at:
http://www.pinetreeweb.com/whitestg.htm or at Brian Phelp's superb White
Stag pages at: http://www.whitestag.org/ Here you will find a wealth of
historical and other resources about a course that goes back 40 years!
Other names I have heard are, Golden or Silver Acorn (Salt Lake), JLTC-The
Challenge (Houston), Bearpaw, Golden Arrow, Bridger Badge.

I have a question for the list.
Does your council have a special name for your council Junior
Leader Training Conference? If so, does it have a special
significance, or does it suggest a theme of some kind? How did
it get chosen or started, etc?
