Gotta tell someone!! Amazing PLC last night! got down to some plain talk
about the troop organization , the boys agreed that we need to reinstitute
patrols, and do things by patrol. A leader who was involved a few years ago
was given high praise by the boys for doing things at the patrol level &
skills training. Recognizing that we don't have adults available at his
level of experience, they agreed to have mixed age patrols where the older
boys will train the younger. It was understood that it will be difficult
for a while to get this going. On 11/4 they will choose patrols. One of the
boys suggested that the boys first choose a buddy they would want to be in
a patrol with and that both get in the same patrol. After the buddying up,
the multiple level experience groups be put in separate hats and drawn
randomly so each patrol will get a mix of the experience levels. Since no
camping plans were drawn up yet for the next few months, I asked if they
wanted a leader to make some reservations at our local council camp, and I
was politely told, that the boys would decide that during the patrol
meetings. I'm still on a high about this! They also mentioned that at
campouts they used to have planned activities, not just go camping for the
sake of camping!!! It will take a lot of energy to pull this off and make
this 'culutre change' work!!! Any and all comments & materials from you
will be gratefully accepted.

BTW, we put on a spaghetti supper last sunday that netted the troop close
to $800, and the leaders were not worn to a frazzle by the end of the
supper!! 20 of 23 active scouts participated. I hardly got my hands wet
doing dishes. In the last month we've had 8 boys advance in rank. Can you
see I'm excited! But I'm also worried about pulling off the massive shift
in how things will be done.
