Scouts-L Mail Archive for October of 1998: RIP

I was just talking to an old friend from back home who told me that George
Shegog died Monday. Who was George Shegog, you ask? He was a father - 2 sons
(1 Eagle) & a daughter. He was (by the standards of New Concord, OH - pop.
800) something of a real estate tycoon. He was a businessman - owner of the
town grocery, and several others around the region. He was a civic leader -
Chief of the New Concord Vol. Fire Dept. He was my first employer - first as
a laborer on his farm, then in the store. But, more to my point, he was my
Scoutmaster. He was SM of Troop 510 for something like 15 or 20 years,
staying long after his sons were out. In my 7 years in the Troop, he probably
aggrevated me more than anyone I wasn't related to. He also challenged me,
pushed me, guided me, encouraged me, inspired me, & cared about me. As much
as anything, my Scouting is a thank you to him. I couldn't let his passing go
without notice. Please have him and his family in your thoughts.
