At 21:17 -0500 on 10/26/1998, Dennis and Karen Bastarache mailed Mess kit
>My question is did I do the right thing, and if not, what more could
>have I done?
>From my perspective, four hours south of the border, you did absolutely the
right thing. The teasing was inappropriate, the knife was out for purposes
(maybe) of property damage, not personal threat. Had no one touched the
knife holder, there would have been no threat to persons.
All three boys behaved in an inappropriate manner.
Two inappropriate teasers.
One inappropriate reaction to the teasing.
Two inappropriate reactions to that inappropriate reaction.
I do remember my wife the counselor's position: we cannot do anything about
what people do to us, but we are fully in charge of our reactions.
When the teasing reached the point of such anger, it was time for respected
boy leader or adult intervention.
When the knife came out and the pillow was threatened, it was time for
respected boy leader or adult intervention, not time for the other boys to
attempt physical restraint.
A good lesson learning occasion for the whole troop.
Thank you for listening. Ted Burton, Inland Northwest 611, Es Kaielgu 311
