Because we all share a desire to help kids do their best, it is very easy to
get real fired up on an issue and sometimes to react with emotion,
especially when we have had experiences that make an issue very personal.
Please remember that all of the folks at this virtual roundtable are your
fellow Scouts and Scouters. All of us are learning . . . sometimes quickly
and sometimes slowly. Tear into an issue if you will, but please don't tear
into a person or resort to name-calling. Think of this as an open forum
with a couple thousand people in the audience. Would you say the same thing
if all those people were watching you? What would they be thinking?
Remember that when a person resorts to personal attacks it usually spawns
more emotion, but rarely a solution or an improvement in understanding. And
the person that resorts to such an attack may well be seen as the person
with the problem.
A good rule of thumb for discussion via e-mail is to hold any posting made
in anger for a couple of days and then to reread it after having had time to
cool off and see it in a new perspective. Chances are you'll rewrite it or
trash it, because it isn't the sort of thing you'd say to a friend without
