The easiest thing to do is make sure you have a copy of the current
edition of "Boy Scout Requirements" (#33215), (the RB) which lists the
current requirements for all Boy Scout Advancements, including Ranks,
Merit Badges, and misc. awards like the Totin' Chip, Lifeguard BSA, etc.
The RB is issued annually around the end of December, and is valid for
the upcoming Calendar Year or until a new edition is issued.
On the inside back cover of that book is a list of the current editions
of all Merit Badge pamphlets. However, the pamphlets are usually NOT
reissued when the requirements change, so the info in the RB overrules
the MB pamphlet when they do not match. The same thing is, of course,
true when the rank requirements change. The Boy Scout Handbook usually
does NOT contain the most current requirements. Here again, the RB
New editions of the Handbook and RB are due out soon. The handbook will
have a number of major, and some minor, changes to the rank requirements
for Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, and Eagle, and minor changes
for Scout, Star and Life. In addition, a number of Merit Badges will
have major revisions. The Rank changes have already been made public,
but not the MB changes.
The US Scouting Service Project (USSSP) team has made an effort to have
all of this information available on the World wide web. All of the
information in the current RB is available at:
In addition to the information in the book, the site also includes
corrections to any typos and editing errors in the book which we have
discovered and verified with the BSA National Office.
We have also included information on the announced changes to the rank
requirements, which are shown at:
The list of current MB pamphlets is at:
As soon as possible after the 1999 RB is issued, we will update the site
to show the changes included in all other advancements, including any
Merit Badge changes.
