I got a number of responses to my post regarding the Aluminum track, so I
thought I would post this publicly.
The aluminum tracks are FAAAAST!!! On our old wood track, the cars seemed
to get hung up on "warped" wood and get stuck. Quite a dissapointment for
the youngsters. With the aluminum track, the seams disappear when put
together. No getting caught or jumping at the seams.
We ordered our plans out of the BSA catalog as we couldnt find any anywhere
else. As I said before, total cost of the track was $700, however, $500 of
that was for the aluminum track itself. That also had to be ordered out of
the BSA catalog as usually the local Scout shops do not carry them.
It took a good 2 months at LEAST to build the track and that was a LOT of
hours invested into it. I would recommend that the person in charge of
building the new track, be dedicated enough to invest the time it requires.
Also, it took a long time for us to get the aluminum tracks from the BSA
catalog, as they were backordered. So my husband and I were up until
midnight the night before screwing the aluminum onto the frame. Order your
tracks NOW if you want them by January (or whenever you have your Derby).
Derby Day went great, as everyone was excited about the brand new track.
Many of the fathers that were there, raced on the old track. So it was a
day of remembering the past as well.
Feel free to contact me anytime during the building process if you have any
questions. It's a big job, but pays off ten-fold on its first Derby Day
when you get to see the faces of the boys (and their fathers) put their
cars at the starting gate.........

PS. Anyone have any ideas on what to do with the monstrous old track??
We're thinking about lending it out to Packs that don't have one........
