While I agree that few people know either of these, I'd guess that most
Americans know OF them. One sure way to attract attention is to do
something repetitive BUT OUT OF CONTEXT. Even if the person listening
doesn't know Morse, the repetitive dat-dot-dat dat-dot-dat alerts that
person to the presence of another. And S-O-S is hard to miss, even if
they get it wrong and do O-S-O
Likewise semaphone patterns laid out on a beach or cut into a field will
And once you've gotten someone's attention, the battle's half won. It
may not be hi-tech, but it's not chopped liver either.
