While we are on the subject of Scouts' "committment," I have a question for
the list at large:
What is your troop's position on Scouts who have sports, family, or church
committments on campout weekends and have to either arrive at the campsite
later than the rest of the troop or leave sooner? (I.e., an older boy has a
football game Friday night and his dad will drive him to the campsite and stay
to drive him home on Sunday OR a Scout has a family reunion on Sunday
afternoon and his parents are arriving at the campsite to take him early.)
Now, I fully understand the responsibility of a parent to make sure the boy
has transportation both ways without inconveniencing the rest of the troop.
That is not the issue. Nor is my question about driving commitments made by
the parent of the boy to bring other Scouts to or from the campsite.
Additionally, there is the issue of boys helping unload gear when they get
back but that is not my question either.
My question is simply: do you force a boy to choose between attending
whatever part of a campout he can or not going at all when he has a legitimate
