This is my take on the Venture advancement program based on getting a brand
new crew spun up and going over the literature.
Bronze-Gold-Silver is a progression of advancement awards for the Venturer.
The Bronze Award can be earned in as many as five crew specialties including
outdoor (high adventure), sports, arts/hobbies, youth ministry and Sea
Scouting. Gold Award follows and requires the Venturer to serve a minimum of
12 months, be a leader either in or outside of the crew, carry out a personal
growth agreement in six experience areas including citizenship, leadership,
fitness, social, outdoor and service; participate in a district level or high
Venturing event, and serve as an activity chair for two crew events. Gold is
also the first award that requires letters of recommendation and a Board of
Review. The Silver Award requires prior earning of at least one Bronze and
the Gold Award as well as being proficient in Emeergency Preparedness
(standard first aid, CPR, Safe Swim Defense), serve six months as a leader in
the crew, participate in two Ethical Controversies (a discussion program at
the crew level), lead or help lead a Ethics Forum (outside expert in the area
of interest comes in to talk to the crew), and complete the Venturing
Leadership Skills Award. Ranger Award is only open to those crews
specializing in high adventure and requires the completion of 8 core and 4
elective requirements. If your son is getting ready to join a crew, I suggest
that he and you obtain the Ranger Guidebook, Venturing Leader Manual and the
Silver Award Guidebook that outlines these awards and how the crew should
Now your second question. From the Venturing Reference Guide, "Any male
Venturer who has acheived the First Class rank as a Boy Scout in a troop or
Varisty Scout in a team may continue working twoard the Star, Life and Eagle
wawards while a Venturer up to his 18th birthday" Leadership requirements can
be met in the crew, the SM conference will be conducted by the crew advisor
and the Board of Review by the crew committee.
Hope this helps.
