Recently there have been some postings on Scoutmasters acting as Merit Badge
Counselors, and whether or not they can do it.
The BSA has no bar to Scoutmasters counseling Merit Badges, as long as they
are qualified and registered. However, there's a question in my mind as to
whether or not they SHOULD do it.
If I remember my training right, one of the major aims of the Merit Badge
program is to encourage Scouts to learn to properly contact adults what are
not (initially) familiar to them, introduce themselves to them, and schedule
and keep appointments and committments with them. This object is defeated
if more than a few merit badges are counseled by the Scout's
I see no reason why a Scoutmaster shouldn't counsel a few Merit Badges, but
personally I plan to limit it.
