Been following this thread with interest and even put in my .02 once
already, then had another thought about the whole SM Conf/BOR/COH process.
Whaddya think about these two thoughts:
1. One thing that we would probably all agree on is that young men of this
age (11-18) need consistency and routine. Gosh, even all the family
counselling and parenting guidance professionals tell us that. Boys need
routine, process, consistent rules and frankly...predictability. Seems to
me that the scouting program provides this in spades! If you look at the
whole advancement scheme, it's set up to let the scout know exactly WHAT is
expected WHEN and then let's him know what his rewards will be for folowing
through with this process. Seems to me that by holding BORs for multiple
ranks that we're just throwing a wrench in those kindly gears.
2. In this day when young men are "looking for the easy way out" at home,
with school work, shoot, even with sports. It seems to me that BORs with
multiple rank advancements are just another "shortcut" learned. I have
always considered scouting as one of those places where this just didn't
Bet I'll take some heat on this one! (very big grin)
BLUE SKIES!, Any day above ground is a good day!
