The standards used in the Personal Fitness Merit Badge booklet
are from the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance. I called their headquarter for more info. They are not even
sure that they can find a copy of the Health Related Physical Fitness
Test as it has been obsolete for about ten years.
It has been replaced by something called "Physical Best" and an
evaluation called "Fitnessgram" The entire idea of "percentiles" has
They also said anyone still doing sit-ups in 1998 is SERIOUSLY
behind the times. Sit-ups are dangerous to the lower back. Crunches or
curls are what you should do instead.
As an example a fifteen year old boy would need to do between 24 and 47
curl-ups in one minute to be in the nominal range.
