Scouts-L Mail Archive for October of 1998: Wanted: BSA Membership Figures
Wanted: BSA Membership Figures

I've been looking for BSA membership figures. I visited the Official
BSA Web site and I found that they are way behind the times. The
membership stats they display on their Web site only go up to the
year of 1994 !!!
What happened in the last 4 years?
Or even three years for that matter?
What was BSA membership in 1997?
It's not shown !!! Here's what they've shown on their site at:
MEMBERSHIP AND UNITS
Membership since 1910 totals more than ninety-million.
As of December 31, 1994, membership was 5,378,546.
Tiger Cubs 266,392
Cub Scouts 945,640
Webelos Scouts 819,136
Lone Cub Scouts 114
Boy Scouts 908,595
Varsity Scouts 69,731
Lone Boy Scouts 282
I totaled these youth figures and came up with 3,009,890.
So if I subtract this from the other total they give we get
2,368,656. Is this the number of adults? Just a guess.
I think they could come up with a little more recent information
than this don't you ?
To me the info I found was a little disappointing and outdated
to say the least. It doesn't give us a clear view of where we
are now or show if we're making membership progress or losing
ground. I'd like to see something that shows total registered
youth/adult for at least the past 5 years. Even more would be
nicer, but that might be asking too much. But obviously they
have the figures somewhere and could show them if they so desired.
I continued my search on the Web and found some more stats on a
Web site for the World Organization of the Scouting Movement (WOSM).
You'll find WOSM at: http://www.scout.org/
BSA is a member of WOSM. WOSM collects membership figures from
the 217 Countries and Territories that belong to them and has
Scouting. As of March 13, 1998, WOSM shows that the United
States (BSA Only) had 5,632,897 members.
It's all a little confusing to me. But why should it be?
Why don't we get OFFICIAL member figures from BSA on a yearly basis?
Maybe there is a SECRET LIST that only PAID employees of our BSA
Maybe it's as simple as, we have to ask for these figures because
they're keeping them under their hat or something?
Is this confidential business information?
I don't have any answers. Do you?
I just thought it would be interesting food for thought and facts
that we should all know or learn more about. Let's see what else
we can learn about this and share it with each other. Do you have
any more facts and figures? Please send them in if you can.
