Congratulations on your wonderful campout...it sounds like your boys had a
lot of fun. I just want to give you a few words of caution for the future
to help you and others avoid any problems.
1) When building "zip lines" and the like, make sure that you follow the
Guide to safe Scouting in constructing them. If the zip line hits a certain
height or length I believe it falls under the classifications of a C.O.P.E.
Course, and therefore has to pass inspection by the National Council. This
was a problem at Camp Mattatuck years ago (before our COPE course) when we
had a "Slide for Life" zip line over our lake. When someone got hurt, we
were forced to take it down because it didn't follow National guidelines.
2) Remember when ever there are Aquatic activities, there must be someone
who has taken the Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat training, and all of
those guidelines must be met as well. Although it is not currently
required, it is recommended that a lifeguard be present as well.
Forgive me if all of these guidelines were followed, but I wanted to educate
the group as a whole that there are precautions to be taken to ensure the
safety of the scouts in activities of this nature.
