Note: I am publicly doing my own whining here, something that I have
scholded others for doing.
If some of you think that the new Eagle requriements keep out 50% of the
population, think again. I keeps out more than 50%. The requirement read:
7. From the PERSONAL FITNESS merit badge pamphlet, perform
the physical fitness test (chapter 8) with your patrol
leader, Scoutmaster, parent, or adviser before doing the
next two requirements. Be evaluated above the 50th
percentile in the aerobic endurance test, flexibility
test, and muscular strength test.
So it the requirments will keep out 50% of the population just for the
aerobic endurance test. So out of the 50% that pass the aerobic endurance
test, some will still not pass the flexibility test. Lets guess that of
those that are fit enough to pass the first test, 90% will pass the second
test. That means that 45% of the population will pass both the first and
second tests. Lets then guess that 95% of those that pass the first two
tests pass the third test. That leaves us with 43% of the populations that
can pass *all three tests*.
The point is that even with training and practice, we will find that not
all scouts will be able to pass all of the tests. So now, are we
discriminating against certain classes such as overweight scouts? Is there
now a weight requirement for Eagle? Have we added additional requirements
that were not intended?
I suspect that the distribution of physical abilities of the population of
scouts is very close to the distribution of the general population.
I can live with the new requirements...to a point. But I reserve the right
