I realize that I'm no expert on JOTA, but as I have done some very basic
research, I'll share it with Scouts-L so that others can avoid going over
the same ground.
1. To find an amateur radio operator:
You can contact the American Radio Relay League's Educational Activities
Department toll free at 800-326-3942. They will probably give you Jean
Wolfgang's number - 860-594-0219 (in CT). She can give you the name and
number of a club in a town near you. She also gave me this site for
2. For basic how to:
The handout from National will help the volunteer radio operator know what
is going on and gives a few guidelines. It also includes the frequencies
that will be in use and the call signs and frequencies of the special Boy
Scout sites (Camp Wilson in Dallas TX, the World Scout Bureau HQ in
Switzerland, and Gilwell Park England).
3. Don't forget GSUSA also participate in JOTA. Ask Jean at ARRL for GSUSA
4. The address for the JOTA at BSA National:
The JOTA Coordinator in Irving TX will send you a great package about JOTA.
I suggest that you send for one, it will help your ham operator and it
includes a form for reporting your experience to JOTA. I called and had it
in less than a week.
Postcard-size certificates are free and are available to anyone
participating in any way. They may be ordered beforehand for presentation
during the JOTA, or they may be awarded at Scouting or amateur radio club
meetings later. Send requests to:
