Scouts-L Mail Archive for October of 1998: Re: Saluting

Having served 12 years as an enlisted man, I don't feel terribly slighted by
the fact that my Scouts don't salute me. We only salute the flag in Troop
381. The references in the various editions of the Handbook make it clear
saluting Scouts and Scouters is optional, so I agree with the folks who say
leave it up to the PLC and stay out of it.
On the subject of the Medal of Honor, I disagree that the salute is rendered
to the medal. It is true that generals do not salute privates (or admirals
seamen) as a rule, but they do salute the unfathomable, selfless courage in
the face of near-certain death that earns that medal; believe me, they
salute the person. I was an E6, and would have counted it a privilege to
render a smart salute to an E2 who had so distinguished himself!
Carrying it over, I would also render the same honors to a Scout who wore
the Honor Medal.
