Troop 184 has just been notified that we have been accepted for the Naval
Academy Camporee in January at Annapolis. We are very excited about this
opportunity, but have one problem...
I am curious to know how other troops have handled situations like this.
Have some school systems made allowances for scout outings like this,
taking into account the educational value? How would a troop go about
seeking such an allowance? Should we try to take advantage of this outing,
or should we not do it since it interferes with school?
Any help would be appreciated?
You should first check with the Naval Academy and see if they have a
prepared educational facet to the camporee. This is most likely not the
first time this has come up.
A few years ago our BS district and GS division went on a joint white water
rafting trip with 15 boys, 15 girls and 20 adults. We left on a friday at
1PM. To do so the kids had to leave school 1 1/2 hours early.
We got some grief from the superintendant, even though each kid had a parent
sign them out. We pointed out that 2 weeks later all these kids were getting
a school trip for a full day on a friday to an amusement park to celebrate
the end of a school year.
We came back with the 1/2 inch thick educational curriculim from the rafting
outfitters that went into detail about the geology, history and wildlife in
that area. The school board thought that we had the right idea.
