Just as a 'been there, done that' on the subject of
testing on earlier advancements :
I went to my Eagle Board of Review many moons ago expecting it
to be similar to the reviews for Star and Life : talking with
adult leaders about what I had done to get there, where I
wanted to go, getting guidance on what they expected from
me in my new position. I don't know where the council got
these guys, but it was like being interviewed for a place
on Mount Rushmore by the other four heads. One Scouter in particular
behaved as if he had to lay the egg for every new Eagle.
I was grilled over the requirements for merit badges
I had earned years earlier, and I mean he wanted to know
item by item details for all twenty-one badges. I walked
(lurched) out of that meeting doubting my ability to tie my shoes.
That was a heavy, and to my mind totally unnecessary, ordeal.
Sorry, Scouters, but four years is a long time for a kid. Things
a boy did in a patrol meeting as a Second Class get overlaid by things he
did at Camp working on the MBs for Life. If you've watched a boy helping
a younger boy with knots, you can assume he knows knots. Use the
SM conference for touching up any questions, but it shouldn't be
"And now, for twenty points, what is the Morse code for the letter Q?"
You, and he, should have much more important things to talk about.
