Our Cub Scout pack did moderately well this year; we didn't quite
double the size of the pack, but we came close. We did not do as well
as last year, which worried me, since I've been CC for the past two
fall rallies. So, I immediately looked up the last few years'
results. I found that this was the best year we've had in five years,
except for last year. Apparently, last year, we had a really good
year, which made this year look bad. This is against a background of
an elementary school that shows slow, consistent growth in population.
Looking through the records made me notice an interesting thing, for
our pack: Every year, we sign up just over half of the kids that come
to the rally. Very consistently. What varies is how many families
come to the rally. What I'm taking forward to next year because of
this is that we should work on ways to get more of the kids to the
One positive note this year is that we signed up several leaders at the
School Night rally this year; last year, we had no new leaders
interested at the rally, and had to scramble the first few weeks. The
only specific difference I can point to between the two years is our
procedure: before the boy applications were handed out, but after we
had asked for leaders, we went to each table (seated by age group) and
asked, "Okay, for these 7 wolves that are joining, who are the 2
leaders that are joining? Let's get those first."
