Use the Sterns method, no eliminations. Have a bunch of other
prizes and awards such as Most creative, best paint job,
wildest looking, etc. See if you can hold the event in
conjunction with some established community event. We had
ours during a founders day celebration. We got lots of
exposure. Do you have a local rocket club? Maybe they
would be willing to do a demo along with your Space Derby.
I always make Badge-a-minute buttons with some kind
of space or nautical artwork.
How about a space helmet contest or a helmet building
session open to brothers and sisters. Maybe a rocket building
craft session (cardboard tubes, construction paper, glue, markers.)
Have all this going on before or during the race.
Same thing for raingutter, a boat building session/contest
("pointy" wood blocks, cardboard, markers, etc).
Serve green Mars brew (kool aid), or pirate broth. Just
