I did this in my Wolf den last year. Only I handled it a little
differently. I came in with a blank medium sized poster board. Rather
than have all the rules listed out and me sit there and read them to them
while they are crawling all over the floor wrestling with each other. I
had them sit in a circle and had THEM make up the rules.
You'll be surprised how much better they remember the rules when they are
the ones that made them. Instead of me telling them what the rules should
be, I had them discuss it as a group. They came up with most of them. In
situations where they didnt immediately come up with something, I would
guide them. IE: They came up with the rule... Second warning and you sit
in a chair in the corner. To which I said "what about a 3rd warning, what
should happen?" And THEY came up with calling the parent to come pick them
We only had about 4 rules. But they covered all the major issues.
Throughout the year, someone would remember the rules and bring it up
whenever someone else was misbehaving.
It kept me from dictating the rules and also without the boys knowing it,
had them watching each others behavior, and were sure to say something to
them if they saw them acting up. Took a little of the pressure off of me.
