My FAVORITE summer camp facility doesn't exist anymore. It was
called Camp Covered Bridge, and was located seven miles to the
northeast of the east end of Louisville, Kentucky. The camp
featured a REAL covered bridge to cross (later the bridge was
replaced with a steel girder bridge). I loved "Cardinal Point",
the Order of the Arrow building (which still exists, but is NOW a
The facility is now a private home development.
So, I would go to my second favorite summer camp facility, Camp
McKee, located outside of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky and featuring a
very large man-made lake. Camp McKee also has a OA building which
overlooks the lake and a lot of great programming each summer.
More information on Camp McKee can be obtained through the
Bluegrass Council, BSA, in Lexington, KY. I'm memorized the old
office location since at one time I used to work from there (when
they were on Liberty Road), but now they are closer to downtown and
across from Transy University, and I could never remember the
address. If Dan O' (O'Canna), is still here, perhaps he can add to
this posting with the current address of the Bluegrass Council's
I've spent more summers at Camp Covered Bridge and Camp McKee than
any other summer camps...and I've enjoyed every second of it! I
would recommend Camp McKee to any Scouter looking for a different
and more diverse camp operation for their Troop. I'm hoping that
the Council will be able to make the money they need to build the
other "half" of the camp (there's more land on the other side of
the camp that's still "in development stage").
