How much latitude do you give in the service project hours required for
ranks below Eagle?
Lately I've had several scouts come to me to be signed off on their
second class service hour, based on their being altar servers at church.
Another helps out with a group of handicapped kids, which includes his
brother. And my son tells me that one of his friends is planning to use
volunteer service as a crossing guard for Star service. I've even had a
mom tall me her son should get service hours for helping out at a troop
I'm a new scoutmaster. Apparently, my predecessor gave the boys pretty
loose guidelines. And I don't want to discourage the scouts from being
helpful in the ways mentioned above. But my impression has always been
that the service hours for rank advancement were supposed to be helping
out with someone's Eagle project, a troop service project for our
charter organization, etc.
What do others on the list require of their scouts?
