This has worked so well for us over years past.
The Idea: Let the boys in each den, vote on a name for their den. This
is MUCH more exciting for them than being in ho-hum Den 1. It also gives
the guys a unique sense of ownership. The selection is made from the
many Boy Scout Patrol Badges found in the Insignia Guide.
1.Get your Insignia Guide, find the Boy Scout patrol emblem page, and
make a few copies, enough for each Den Leader(DL).
2.Give each DL a copy of the names(choices). BE SURE to tell the DL in
front of his/her guys, that THEY are choosing their den name.-Squiggle
time! BUT emphasize that they need to act quickly, to be sure they get
the name they want..More Squiggles!. Make it known that each den has ?
week(s) to select a name.
3.After den votes, DL calls you DURING a den meeting to insure the name
is still available. You confirm it is, cross it off your copy of the
names, and so on, until all dens have selected a name.
4.You or someone goes to Scout Shop, picks up enough Boy Scout Patrol
Badges for the name the dens chose. (remember the DL and Ass'ts) AND a
patrol flag with the same animal on it. Flags used to be white with a
critter sewn to it. The flag becomes their Den Flag, the den can
embellish it, and each boy gets to autograph that hummer!!
5.Next Pack Meeting- Announce, with panache~; each den name, call each
den up, present the shoulder patches and the flags to the guys, tell
them what a "SOOPAH" job they did.
6.Den Patch goes where the den numeral would have.
7.Den Flag is brought to all pack functions to designate that den's
Regulation? No, but in the 8 years the packs I worked with did this, the
boys had a lot of FUN with this. Each den was of course, "the coolest"!
Best of all, retention stayed up, and morale was high.
