What would I do? Well, first let tell you that I got my Eagle, to the great
surprise of my SM (I was a bit of a goof-off), just before 18 (hours before,
in fact), that my hair is not only longish but in the past has been past my
waist, & that I wear an earring (just one). None of this has kept me from
being an effective leader for Explorers, Tigers, Cubs & Boy Scouts over the
last 21 years. The question you need to ask is not whether you should accept
an unconventional-looking leader, but whether the young man has anything to
offer the unit. That one we can't answer - only you & he, together, can.
Talk to him, find out who he is now (6 mos. can be a lifetime at that age).
If you can't see past the trappings, shut your eyes & talk. If he just wants
the paper signed, make your call accordingly. But be sure you're not turning
away a good resource.
