The American Legion has an impressive public retirement ceremony in
which Scout Troops often participate. The flag is cut into fifty strips
for the fifty states. Each strip is burned when the state, named in
order of admission to the union, is read.
It is important to point out here the thee Legion runs counter to the
U.S. flag code (which is a set of etiquette guidelines but carries no
force of law), which says the flag should be privately burned with
dignity and WITHOUT CEREMONY.
