Thanks to those of you who responded to my request for information
about how your District/Council provides Boy Scout Leader Basic
Training (SMF)! My unscientific survey shows that Districts mainly
"sponsor" courses. The low average cost is $18 and the high average
is $22. Within Councils, 4-6 courses are offered per year averaging
20 Scouters per course. BTW, my Smokey hat is off to the trainers in
the Transatlantic Council who feel that 150 miles is a "short" distance
My Council "hosts" one course in the spring and each District (9 total)
usually "hosts" one course each fall. Neighboring Districts frequently
co-host the fall courses so we offer 4-5 per year total. Attendance
varies from 6-64. The cost is $20-$25. I have been Course Director
for several of these courses but the District Training Chairs either
recruit someone or do it themselves.
I didn't introduce myself before jumping in with my request for help.
So ... I am District Boy Scout Training Chair and ASM in one district
and Unit Commissioner and ASM in another district. (My sons joined
different Troops in different districts!) I'm a good old Eagle too
from W3-23-94 and was a staffer for WEM3-96. Some of my greatest
joys and challenges have come from serving on staff for several
JLT courses. I highly recommend this experience to any of you!
Keep those great discussions going!
