Jack, I would suggest that you start with YPP training as being the baseline
requirement. This will give you time to get to know the parent to determine
if you want to ask him/her to be an ASM. It's easier to ask some to be one
than to tell someone that it isn't working out. Give yourself the
opportunity to evaluate.
I did and it resulted in my having 14 ASM's that were very active during
meetings and campouts. I also was able to obtain many great committee people
(36) who were excited to have an opportunity to be actively involved without
"having to go on every campout".
As to parent participation which is always an issue, remember it has to be
fun for them too.
I'm really pleased that your relationships with the Scouts is one where they
felt comfortable in talking to you about the situation. That's part of what
it's all about.
