Hello the List,
We just returned from a wonderful weekend of camping at Sid Richardson
Scout Ranch where we held our annual Troop Planning Conference. The reason
I am posting to the list is because I need help from the more politically
correct people of the world of which I have observed there are several who
hang out here on this list.
Out of the 150 items that we wrote down in the original "Brain Storming"
sesion, I personally was very suprised that our traditional Bike Ride/
Chicken Kill campout made it all the way thru to the finally calander. I
debated the issue in my mind and decided to NOT tell them about the Troop
in Highland Park, Texas who was hung out to dry in the Dallas Morning News
over there Chicken Kill campout just last spring. We had ours in February
so ours was over and a non issue by the time the newspaper printed there
bit on "Scouts Chasing Chickens Around with Hatchets". I have made a
pretty good living the last 26 years as a meat cutter and will have a hard
time deciding that what I have been doing for a living since the tender
young age of 14 has anything at all with being "cold blooded" or "blood
thirsty" or "hardended". It is pretty easy for me to reject as non-sense
any arguement that a sweet lovable chicken should not be used as a food.
Right. And I suppose we should not take Scouts fishing either and if they
should catch a fish should gently throw it back and don't even consider it
as a food. Right. And if they find themselves in the Alaska wilderness
with winter coming on and happen to find and old bus for shelter and you
happen to kill a moose, don't eat any of that either. Starve to death and
be found the next spring with a moose carcase there with you and make
"People" magazine, as a fellow did a few years ago!!! Not one of my Scouts!
My question is; Besides notifiying the Council Office and obviously our
Charter Organization, the local police, who by the way drove into our camp
last year at 7 am wanting to see our permits, and maybe getting a special
parent permission slip signed, who else should I consider notifying?
I feel pretty good about the Council. They have been supportive and level
headed along with practical in the face of the a media feeding frenzy
before. Our Charter Organization is like wise a great bunch who are not
afraid of the sometimes louder single minded frog dodgers in the world.
You know the folks who drive down a dirt road a dusk and will be swerving
all over the road to avoid killing a frog and ignore the danger to
themselves and there pasengers. You know FROG DODGERS.
Thanks in advance.
Yours in Scouting,
