Let's try it this way: The same security concerns apply to the Jamboree of
the Air, BUT because of the way licensing of radio operators works AND because
of the registration process associated with the activity AND the limited
nature of the interaction (radio call sign of licensed operator - can't get
the youth through the radio after that) the protection of the youth is
significantly greater than exists on the net.
The potential for persons obtaining personal information, email addresses,
etc. and using that to gain access to a youth is much more difficult to
control than in the JOTA approach.
I was prepared to "argue" that there were methods to provide appropriate
levels of protection on the net as well -- the issue is that while those
methods may exist they had not been implemented. As a result, I was quiet.
Recognize that our society is a bit more given to litigation than are others.
As a result BSA must be (like it or not) more sensitive than some of the other
Scouting organizations to issues such as this.
