Simply put: It's their patrol. As much as we would like to see some
continuity or history and tradition developed in the patrol, it's not our
patrol. If they want to change the name, that's their choice. My choice
involves approving what that name will be.
Concerning "History and Tradition": Just because the name of the patrol
changes, it is still the same patrol, isn't it? The membership is the same
anyway. Changing the name of the patrol shouldn't necessarily change the
traditions started by that patrol. As for continuity, all that is needed is
a note in the troop history to the effect that the "Hawk Patrol" is now to
be known as the "Sega Specialist Patrol".
If you make the history and traditions of a particular patrol interesting to
the present members, they might decide they like the name. If they don't
know the history, or it isn't interesting to them, they may find the name
boring. In the end, it's their patrol and they should be able to shape it
into something meaningful to them. It's all part of that old patrol spirit.
