Sorry, no, elections are the way to go. I have watched youth choose others
because of popularity. I have also watched them choose those they honestly
wanted to have as people in their campsites.
The former come from places where the election team does it spiel and they
vote. The latter come from units where O.A. is important enough that they
recognize the new Ordeal members after they have completed the ordeal, where
the Troop attends callouts en masse, where the SM is smart enough to step up
and intoduce the OA election team and say "They/He are/is here to help you
choose who among those eligible YOU would want to have by your side when you
go camping. Who YOU see as the person most likely to help you learn more on
campouts.Who YOU see as someone who comes by to help you when you have
problems and you don't know how to fix something or complete a requirement."
And hold your elections before Christmas. If your Lodge will do it, have them
do a callout at your Troop ceremonies so that the younger boys realize that
they are recognizing someone who is being selected for an HONOR.
