Perhaps you may have read about an accident on Interstate 40 in Western NC
on Friday, 24, 1998, in which a 18 wheeler carrying a load of gasoline
crashed into a bridge and overturned, followed by a spectacular explosion
which melted the I-beams holding up the bridge, causing it to collapse
onto the interstate. The highway was closed until late afternoon on the
The driver did not escape the wreckage, and died on the scene.
I found out on Thursday (while the list was misbehaving) that the driver
was Ricky Alan Bean, Scoutmaster of Troop 258 (?) in Kings Creek, NC. He
leaves a wife and two children behind. Prayers and scouting wishes are
solicited for the family.
Though I never met him, I know he will be missed terribly by both his real
family, and his scouting family.
