Although I'd love to have a real live BSA issue hatband for my "lemon
squeezer," I went the route of the army surplus hat for 10 bucks. In
fact it was a tad small and I had to make a hat stretcher to make it fit
me. When I looked at the leather band for it I hesitated to spend that
much money for something that might not work out over time.
Rather than keep the satin ribbon band I tied a 27 cross (bight?),
trippled turk's head knot, out of parachute cord. I used 2 strands of
green flanking one strand of red. It looks plenty snazzy and the whole
rig ran less than $12. I've seen hand tooled leather bands and one made
from a commando rope. All of which seem in keeping with the Scouting
A possible source for the straw campain hat similar to the ones park
rangers wear would be a police uniform supply house. Most moderate
sized towns have 'em. My local retailer will special order the
(read NO REFUND/NO RETURN) for $68.50. One would be nice, but for
me anyway, not quite $68.50 worth.
If anybody has a spare hat to sell/trade a couple of the new staffers
on our upcoming Wood Badge course are in the market for a "Smokey Bear"
