I have no idea if carrying emergency communications is virgin pure
camping and frankly who cares? Not being prepared to call for help if
it is needed is wrong and probably in our wonderful litigious land:
actionable if not criminal neglect.
I carry a j-pole role-up antenna and a HAM radio. The entire rig is
less than 1# and I simply allow for it. If we get in to something
nasty, being able to call another HAM could save a life. Seems like a
good use of 14 or so ounces to me. I plan to start carrying a topo
capable GPS. Again, what is the cost? 10 Oz is flat worth it.
