Bad for two reasons.
One. Most camps do not have regular phone service ( at least in my part
of the world). One camp where my troop has gone a number of times only
has a radiophone connection. Logistically it would be a nightmare to
have 3-400 boys call home.
Two. More importantly he is becoming a man. This is his time on his own.
Fantasize. Imagine he is on a classified mission for the government and
security prevents communication. Think of how proud you will be when he
tells you of his achievements. Go clean his room. Write letters, send
Care Packages ( Mom's cookies never taste better than at summer camp
about 4-5 day in).
A final point. Summer camp is the scouts nicoderm patch approach to the
old cutting the apron strings problem which I think is what you are
already suffering from. Hang in there, it gets easier each year and
remember if you go, you are ASM Carol Kelley, not Mother Carol Kelley(
except when they want to borrow money, you're still stuck with that
