I have no problem with a parent bringing his/her son out late or picking
him up early (other than the usual reservations that he is not
participating in the entire campout, and certainly missing the setup &
cleanup work ...). I DO expect the parent to communicate this to me ahead
of time and for the Scout to communicate with his Patrol Leader about it.
OTOH, I would be EXTREMELY reluctant for a 16-yr old Scout to drive himself
to or from a campout, for the following reasons:
1. I become, in effect, a temporary guardian for the boy during the
campout. There should be a physical hand-off from the parent to me and from
me back to the parent. This is fudged a bit when the boys carpool to or
from the church, but the principle is still there.
2. If the boy doesn't show up, I have no idea whether he never left,
had an accident, stopped at Joe's bar on the way, or whatever. His parents
will expect me to be responsible for him. If, however, his parents
transport him, THEY are responsible until they arrive at our campsite. Same
rationale for leaving early.
3. If Bobby has a car, it is more difficult to control his comings and
goings (short of taking the keys when he arrives. Some boys will want to
drive back home with Bobby, and that is not permissible. It's easier to
just never have the subject come up.
4. If I decide that the boy must leave camp early (discipline
problem), I REQUIRE that parents come and get the Scout. This has happened
only once, but if the Scout had had a vehicle at camp, it would have been
much more sticky.
Other folks may have a different view of things.
