I'm not sure from your post whether you're talking about just adults going
for training or taking boys to Philmont. If you're talking about taking
boys, and since you've already got a fair travel stint from "down
south",I'd suggest taking a plane to Kansas City and then taking the Sante
Fe railroad to Philmont. The memory of the train ride is one that our
scouts will never forget....and probably one that many of them will never
duplicate in their lives given the disappearance of the train lines. We're
about 40 mins. from KC (Lawrence, KS) and on the Sante Fe route. We take
the train to both Philmont summer expeditions and for Kanik, Philmont's
winter camping program. The train ride is an event in itself!
And Jerry, with some advance notice, I'll bet that our troop would
volunteer to ferry you and your scouts from the KC International Airport
to the KC train terminal or to Lawrence where you can catch the train with
little hassle. KCI is about 50mins from Lawrence.
Hope this helps.
