Our troop is chartered by a Catholic Parish in St. Petersburg, FL. In the
past one of our parish priests was active in the troop, went camping with
us and such. He was our troop Chaplain and as such he wore a position patch
of Chaplain. He has since been transferred out of our parish.
We had a dad step forward to assume the duties of working with the
Chaplains Aide, he also is a trained counselor for the various religious
awards offered to Catholic Scouts. I figured that at the upcoming Court of
Honor, I'd recognize him in his new role. Call him forward and hand him a
position patch for Chaplain in exchange for his ASM patch. I looked in the
BSA Insignia Guide and under the Chaplain position, it seemed to indicate
that the patch was for clergy only.
In the wisdom of the list, would it be appropriate to have a lay person
wear this patch, or is it reserved for clergy only?
