11 and 12 year olds age and become 13 and 14, and later 15-17. Besides aging
they tend to elongate and bulk up a bit. For a long time our Troop used to use
2-person Eureka!'s but a couple of years ago we changed over to 4-person
Eureka!'s. The weight is 7 vs. 8 3/4 lbs., but they are servicable for the
duration. They're good for out of the trailer, or on a trek can be split
between 3. The advertized capacity rarely realistic.
Now the Eureka! Timberlines (3 person) aren't hi-tech, but they are durable.
They cost $160 out of Campmor; the Eureka! Clip Alpine Meadows run $200 (which
we use) weigh another 1.5 lb, and are that much more resilient. And Campmor
give 10% discount to Scout Troops. They carry other brands as well.
High tech tents are less durable for younger Scouts, as much as you like the
aircraft aluminum, etc. Save them for your own use: I have a Moss 1-person
which I'll use at Philmont, an a 2 and 3 person Sierra.
You haven't mentioned where your Troop is. Climate makes a difference.
Stay away from canvas. As strong and durable as it tends to be is takes extra
special care, especially after you strike camp in the rain.
