For the orienteering course requirement, I set up a 1 mi+ orienteering course
that requires navigating through the neighborhood and parks surrounding our
suburban troop meeting place.
For the map, I scanned the appropriate USGS quad sections, sketched in the new
roads and added magnetic north lines. I also added trails through the parks.
Keeping it on the computer I can print out as many color copies as are
For control points I write a number and a letter on the ground with chalk at
the required location (eg., #1, sidewalk intersection, NW corner has the
letter "S"). When the scouts get to the required position they write the
letter that they find on their control card.
The requirement also says to "measure the height/width" of objects. That has
nothing to do with orienteering, so we do that as a separate session in front
of the school (I know the flagpole is 20' tall and the road is 22' wide).
