We purchased a copy of Parson's Technology's "Newsletters and More" for
creating the newsletters. This is a good basic desktop publishing program.
Other similar programs would include Microsoft Publisher. You can actually
do it in MS Word, Wordperfect, etc. The layout is harder to do if you want
it to look good, but the capability is there. (Some of the fancier options
that you can do with a DTP program, such as having 1/2 page in one
orientation and 1/2 page rotated 90 degrees (which makes sense for a
newsletter folded in half for mailing), are difficult to impossible for a
word processing program.
We used clip art from the SCOUTS-L archives plus scanned photographs of our
activities to keep the newsletter interesting.
Unfortunately, we're not doing the newsletter anymore. I discovered that I,
as SM, was writing *ALL* the articles and the "newsletter editor" was just
printing and mailing it. Neither the boys nor the other adult leaders were
contributing anything, and I didn't have the time to keep it up. Now I
send out postcards reminding people of events -- and even THAT should be
coming from a person on the committee, but isn't.
