We just went through this with our son. Our district requires at least
three references. They have a form letter with columns. We didn't like
this, so I typed the following letter to be given to our pastor,
friends, etc. Hope it helps.
As you know, Jeremy is about to complete his Eagle Scout project. He
set the goal of making the rank of Eagle when he first joined the Tiger
Cubs in the first grade.
In addition to already earning 23 merit badges, and his project, Jeremy
must have at least three Eagle Award References. I would be grateful if
you would write a letter touching on as many of the following categories
(these were the columns)
Accepts trust, responsibility
Example for and good influence on other boys
Willingness to help others
Respectfulness and courteousness
Tolerance toward those who differ with his opinion
(I then tried to jog their memories as to what he's done for them)
As a reminder, he has volunteered at SHARE (warehouse and host site),
helped with Adopt an Angel, and volunteered with the Summer Reading
Program at the North County Library (Anne Arundel County), and even
helped arrange things at Community Concerns. He also participated in the
Red Cross Babysitting Course. The food drives would NOT count since
these were done as a Scout. As a quick reminder, we have been coming to
ALC since July 1992.
Please include your profession/occupation and signature, and enclose in
the attached postage-paid envelop. The letter needs to remain
confidential so would you please send it to ***** (SM's address). We
need the letter by **** (date).
Thank you for helping Jeremy reach his goal.
